Rice weevil - Rice weevil

Japanese: イネゾウムシ - いねぞうむし
Rice weevil - Rice weevil
It belongs to the family Curculionidae in the order Coleoptera, and is known as a rice pest. Its body is black, with dense gray-brown scales on its back. The scales on its thorax and the center of its forewings are dark. There is a pair of gray-white small patterns on the rear of its forewings. Its body length is about 5 mm. It is found in areas west of Honshu and widely distributed in tropical regions, with adults appearing from around April. It feeds by inserting its proboscis into the leaf sheaths of rice seedlings, causing the leaves to break off at this point. It also eats the leaves of grown rice plants, making small holes in them. In June and July, adults make small holes in the stems of rice plants near the water's edge and lay one egg at a time.
