Tanzanian poet and author. In addition to establishing modern Swahili prose poetry, he also wrote novels, essays, biographies, and other works, and is known as the Poet Laureate of Swahili and the Shakespeare of Africa. His works include the collection of poems Ornament of Words (1948), the epic poem Song of the Freedom Fight (1967), the allegorical novels Kusadikika, Land of the Sky (1951), and The Life of Siti Binti Saad (1958).

タンザニアの詩人，作家。スワヒリ語の近代的な散文詩を確立したほか，小説，エッセー，伝記などの作品もあり，スワヒリ語の桂冠詩人，アフリカのシェークスピアとも呼ばれる。詩集《言葉の飾り》（1948年），叙事詩《自由の戦いの歌》（1967年），寓話小説《クサディキカ――大空の国》（1951年），《シティ・ビンティ・サード伝》（1958年）など。
