Tanzanian poet and author. In addition to establishing modern Swahili prose poetry, he also wrote novels, essays, biographies, and other works, and is known as the Poet Laureate of Swahili and the Shakespeare of Africa. His works include the collection of poems Ornament of Words (1948), the epic poem Song of the Freedom Fight (1967), the allegorical novels Kusadikika, Land of the Sky (1951), and The Life of Siti Binti Saad (1958).
