From 【Rakugo】

[Edo Rakugo in the late Edo period]
The Edo Rakugo world, however, fell into decline when reforms in 1842 (Tenpo 13) limited the number of vaudeville halls from over 120 to 15. However, after the downfall of Mizuno Tadakuni, the central figure in the reforms, the restrictions were lifted and the world gradually recovered. Jinjiyo banashi and shabai banashi became popular, and the revival of sandai banashi further led to a flourishing period. Groups of three-topic rakugo stories, such as the Suikyoren and Kyoshoren, were born, and members of these groups included kyogen writers Segawa Jokou, Kawatake Shinshichi (later known as Kawatake Mokuami), comic storytellers Sansante Arind, Kanagaki Robun, and painter Itsukeisai Yoshiiku, as well as Edo literati and connoisseurs such as the gold mining official Takano Suiouken and the wealthy Odenmacho merchant Katsuta (Harunosha Yaiku), as well as rakugo artists Shunputei Ryushi I, Ryutei Saraku 3rd (?-1872), and San'yutei Encho I, and they were all passionate about writing and performing their own three-topic rakugo stories. It was significant that this group's activities led to the development of Encho, who would go on to become a central figure in the Tokyo Rakugo world from the end of the Edo period through to the Meiji era.
