A general term for insects belonging to the family Satyridae (English name: wood nymph) of the order Lepidoptera, or a single species of the family. The family is mainly made up of medium-sized species, with over 2,500 species in the world, and 26 species known in Japan, including the Satyridae (illustration), the Red Nymph (illustration), the Contrail (illustration), the Common Nymph (illustration), the Common Nymph (illustration), and the Black Nymph (illustration). Wingspan is 2.5 to 11 cm. Most are generally brownish and dull, but in South America, in particular, there are beautiful species with metallic luster such as blue or silver, and species whose scales have degenerated and the wings are transparent. 鱗翅目ジャノメチョウ科Satyridae(英名wood nymph)に属する昆虫の総称,またはそのうちの1種を指す。同科は主として中型種からなり,世界に2500余種,日本にはジャノメチョウ(イラスト),ベニヒカゲ(イラスト),ウラナミジャノメ,ヒメジャノメ(イラスト),ヒカゲチョウ,クロコノマチョウ(イラスト)など26種が知られている。翅の開張2.5~11cm。色彩は一般に褐色系でじみなものが多いが,とくに南アメリカ大陸には青色や銀色などの金属光沢をもつ美しい種類や鱗粉が退化して翅が透明になったものなどが見られる。
