Japanese: 著到(着到) - ちゃくとう

In medieval samurai society, the term referred to the arrival of troops rushing to the scene of a crisis or battle in response to a military call. A chotojo was also a document submitted to record the arrival of a soldier who had received an unexpected order to march out to battle, or who had arrived of his own accord after hearing the order himself. The general or military magistrate would then give the document a statement of approval and his seal. A samurai who participated in a battle would submit a chotojo and have his name entered in the chotocho register, with the chotojo being returned to him with a seal of verification. The chotojo was also a certificate of military service during a crisis, and was used as the basis for claiming rewards at a later date.

中世武家社会で，変事や戦闘にさいし，軍勢催促に応じて馳せ集まる軍勢到着の意。また不時の出陣命令を受けてそれに応じ，あるいはみずからこれを聞いて自発的に参着したことを記して提出する文書を著到状といった。大将または軍奉行はこれに承認の旨の文言と署判を与えた。参陣した武士は著到状を提出し，著到帳に自己の姓名を登載してもらい，著到状に証判を加えて返付してもらう。著到状は変事にさいして軍事勤務をはたしたことの証明書でもあり，後日恩賞請求の根拠とされた。
