A type of Japanese umbrella used in rainy weather, mostly used by women. This umbrella is characterized by navy blue Tosa paper pasted around the center and edges, with white paper pasted in between, and when opened, a thick, ring-shaped snake-eye pattern appears, hence the name. It was invented during the Genroku period (1688-1704) as an improvement over the bangasa umbrella. During the time of the eighth Tokugawa Shogun, Yoshimune, the practice of having a family crest became popular among women and connoisseurs. Shibu-janome is painted with a mixture of shibu and red ochre in the center and edges, leaving the middle part white, while yakko-janome is painted only on the edges in a light black color. From the time of the Kyoho and Genbun eras (1716-1741), light umbrellas with thin handles were popular, and later they came to be called thin umbrellas and were carried on the waist. After the end of the Edo period, with the introduction of Western culture and the introduction of Western umbrellas with metal frames that were stronger than Japanese umbrellas, umbrellas fell out of use. Nowadays, they have become a fashionable item for Kabuki actors and those who are looking for chic styles. [Takeshi Endo] [Reference] |Patterns on a janome umbrella.
