Lenticular to massive polymetallic sulfide deposits associated with acidic volcanic rocks such as green tuff from the middle Miocene of the Neogene period in Japan. They contain many useful metals such as copper, lead, zinc, gold, and silver, and are of high grade, making them profitable. They usually contain 1-2% copper, 2-5% lead, 5-10% zinc, 1g/t gold, and several tens of g/t silver, with barite and pyrite also being recovered as by-products. They were also once an important source of gypsum. Kosaka, Hanaoka, and Shakanai in Akita Prefecture are typical examples, and all of them are among the largest mines in Japan.
