Shanidar (English spelling)

A cave site dating from the Paleolithic to Mesolithic periods in the foothills of northern Iraq. It was investigated by RS Solecki and others in the 1950s. Four cultural layers have been identified. The lowest layer (layer D) belongs to the Middle Paleolithic culture, and it is in this layer that the Shanidar people were discovered. Unlike those in Palestine, the stone tools of this Middle Paleolithic culture show almost no Levallois technique, and are noteworthy for being closer to the Mousterian culture of Europe. The next layer (layer C) is the Baladost culture, a Late Paleolithic culture in this region.

イラク北部の山麓地帯にある旧石器時代から中石器時代にかけての洞窟遺跡。1950年代にR.S.ソレッキーらによって調査された。4層の文化層が確認されている。最下層(D層)は中期旧石器文化のものであり，この層からシャニダール人が発見されている。ここの中期旧石器文化の石器はパレスティナ方面と異なり，ルバロア技法がほとんどみられず，むしろヨーロッパのムスティエ文化に近い様相を示していることで注目される。次の層(C層)はこの地域の後期旧石器文化であるバラドスト文化である。
