The resulting depression is called the archenteron, and the opening of the depression is called the blastopore, and the two inner and outer cell layers are called the endoderm and ectoderm, respectively.

〘名〙① ある物が他の物の中におちいること。はまりこむこと。また、くぼむこと。陥没。くぼみ。※米欧回覧実記（1877）〈久米邦武〉四「古代の遺礎は、地下に陥りて、殆と十尺の下にあり、此他にも当時の遺屋の存せるもの、みな地下に陥入せさるはなし」〔春秋左伝‐成公二年〕② 動物の嚢胚(のうはい)形成の過程で、胞胚の片側の外表部分が内側にくぼんでいく現象。その結果できるくぼみの部分を原腸、くぼみの開口部分を原口といい、また内外二層となった細胞層をそれぞれ内胚葉、外胚葉という。
