A type of secular comedy unique to German citizens that became popular from the 15th century onwards, it was so named because it was performed during Carnival. The majority of the approximately 150 extant works are from Nuremberg, but Carnival plays themselves are found throughout Germany, as well as in Switzerland and Austria. The content began with vulgar subjects such as marriage, love affairs, trials and arguments, but later came to deal with religion, politics and morality. Hans Rosenpruth was the pioneer, and H. Sachs in the 16th century was a representative author. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
