1545‐1611 A politician of the Ryukyu Kingdom. Commonly known as Jana Uekata Rizan, Zheng Chao was his Chinese name. Born into a distinguished family of Chinese immigrants to Ryukyu, he studied at the Imperial College and then became one of the three officials, the highest position in the royal court. He advocated a hard-line stance in diplomacy with Japan, and when the kingdom was conquered in 1609 by the Shimazu Invasion (conquest of Ryukyu), he was taken to Kagoshima along with King Shō Nei. However, he was the only one who refused to sign the Satsuma government policy, and submitted to Satsuma's beheading while maintaining the kingdom's honor.
