A former town in Kamomoto County, northwest of Kumamoto Prefecture. An agricultural town on the left bank of the midstream Kikuchi River, producing rice, vegetables, and livestock. High-quality cedar timber is produced on Mt. Meno. In January 2005, it was incorporated into Yamaga City along with Kamomoto County's Kahoku Town, Kikuka Town, and Kamomoto Town. 31.47 km2 . 5,436 people (2003).
