Also known as alkynes, they have the general formula C _n H _{2 n -2} (where n ≧2). They are homologues of acetylene and are a general term for unsaturated chain hydrocarbons with one triple bond. n = 2 is acetylene, n = 3 is methylacetylene, and n = 4 is 1-butyne and 2-butyne. They are highly unsaturated and therefore highly reactive. Up to C ₁₂ H ₂₂ , they are gases or liquids that have a characteristic odor and burn with a bright flame. Mixtures with air or oxygen are explosive. They more easily undergo reactions that are exhibited by ethylenic hydrocarbons.
