One of the classifications of poems in the Manyoshu. Along with poems about "straightforward thoughts" and "thoughts on objects," the Manyoshu also lists "metaphorical" poems that express only things and compare what is in one's heart, and is one of the three classifications of poems based on the method of expression. The Manyoshu also lists three classifications based on the circumstances and motives of the poem: miscellaneous poems, love poems, and elegies, but these classifications are based on different criteria. In metaphorical poems, the inner thoughts are hidden by what is expressed in the poem and are not directly expressed, and are limited to love poems. "I dyed my robe in the purple grass that grows in Tsukumano, and before I had even put it on, it came out in color" (Manyoshu). The reason this classification name does not appear after the Heian period is probably because metaphorical expressions became common in waka poetry.
