A town in southeastern Nepal. It is the center of Dhanuka (Dhanushah) district in Janakpur Prefecture. It has a population of 14,294 (1971). It is a holy place for Hindus, and many pilgrims from India visit the town for the several festivals held each year. It is said to be the birthplace of Sita, the wife of Prince Rama in the epic poem Ramayana, and the royal palace of her father, King Janaka. There are many bathing ponds and wells, Janaki Temple, and other temples built after the 18th century. In recent years, as the district capital, it has been developing in terms of commerce, industry (tobacco, matches, etc.), and administrative and educational facilities. ネパール南東部の町。ジャナクプル県ダヌカー(ダヌシャー)郡の中心。人口1万4294(1971)。ヒンドゥー教の聖地で,年に何度かの祭りにはインドからも多数の巡礼が訪れる。《ラーマーヤナ》の叙事詩中のラーマ王子の妃シーターの誕生の地,その父ジャナカ王の王城の地といわれ,沐浴のための池や井戸,ジャナキ寺院その他18世紀以降に建てられた寺が多い。近年,郡都として,商業,工業(タバコ,マッチなど),行政・教育施設などの面で発展しつつある。
