Also known as Gezira. A triangular lowland between the White Nile and the Blue Nile in the central-eastern part of Sudan, south of the capital Khartoum. It means "island" in Arabic. It is 400m above sea level. The Jazira (Gezira) Project, which began in 1925 to irrigate the Blue Nile from the Sannar and Rusailis Dams, and the Manakil Extension Project, have turned 8,100 km2 of this region into farmland. Millet and fodder crops are also cultivated, but long-staple cotton is the main product and is the economic base of the country. Jazeera |
