Al-Jazirah

Japanese: ジャジーラ(英語表記)al-Jazīrah
Al-Jazirah
Also known as Gezira. A triangular lowland between the White Nile and the Blue Nile in the central-eastern part of Sudan, south of the capital Khartoum. It means "island" in Arabic. It is 400m above sea level. The Jazira (Gezira) Project, which began in 1925 to irrigate the Blue Nile from the Sannar and Rusailis Dams, and the Manakil Extension Project, have turned 8,100 km2 of this region into farmland. Millet and fodder crops are also cultivated, but long-staple cotton is the main product and is the economic base of the country.

Jazeera
al-Jazīrah

The name of a region in northern Iraq. Jazira means "island." It is an undulating plateau 240-460m above sea level, sandwiched between the upper reaches of the Euphrates and Tigris rivers. In ancient times, it played an important role as a passage connecting Iraq, Syria, Iran, Anatolia, and Armenia. Most of it is desert, but pasture grows in early spring, so it is used as seasonal grazing land by nomads.
