A marine fish of the family Acanthidae in the order Perciformes. It is commonly found on the coasts of central and southern Honshu. It is a small fish, reaching a total length of about 12 cm. It is a beautiful fish with an orange-red body, two black-brown lines running from the eye to the back of the head, and a black spot on the caudal peduncle. For this reason, it has many local names, including goldfish, keisei, akajako, and nebuto. In some areas it is called ishimochi, because it has a large otolith in its inner ear. This species, like many other species in this family, is a mouth breeder. It usually lives in large schools, but in the summer spawning season, males and females pair up and the male protects the eggs laid by the female by holding them in his mouth.
