A mid-mountainous, sometimes plateau-like mountain range in the northeastern corner of the Russian Federation. Recently it has also been called the Chukot Mountains. It forms the watershed between the Arctic Ocean and the Bering Strait, and ends in Chukot Bay. It is about 500-1000m above sea level, about 450km long, and continues southeastward, separated by rivers. It is composed of sedimentary rocks such as shale and sandstone, but volcanic deposits are also found in some parts. The highest point is a 2300m peak. The average January temperature is -15°C in the southeast and -30°C in the northwest, and even in summer it is cool and often foggy. Tundra and wetlands develop in the mountains, and bare land is widely distributed on the mountaintops. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
