A style of architecture and craftsmanship during the reign of James I of England (1603-25). It has strong continuity with the preceding Elizabethan style, and is characterized by a mixture of Perpendicular Gothic motifs and somewhat overused classical antique decoration. Many aristocratic mansions built at that time had a common hall and dining room on the first floor and a long gallery on the second floor. Although they were larger in scale, they were not as ornate as Elizabethan houses, and had a simple and subdued appearance. Brick was widely used instead of stone, and windows were changed to small rectangular ones. Representative examples include Charlton House in Wiltshire (1607), Hatfield House in Hertfordshire (1607-12), and Ashton Hall in Warwickshire (1618-35). Furniture in this style is mostly made of oak, and many of them have heavy designs with melon-shaped legs and excessive decoration.
