...A perennial plant of the lily family (illustration) that is a typical understory plant of temperate deciduous forests. It grows in clusters in slightly moist grass on the forest floor, and produces small white flowers in dense panicles in May and June. Its Japanese name comes from its snow-white flowers and conspicuous leaves with parallel veins similar to those of bamboo grass. The stem is 20-60 cm tall and has many spreading hairs. The leaves are alternate in two rows, 6-13 cm long, and have many soft hairs on the underside. There are six perianth petals that open flat, 3-4 mm long, and six stamens. The fruit is a berry, spherical, 5-7 mm in diameter. It ripens red in autumn. ...
