Order: Petrels, Family: Petrels. Appearance is similar to that of gulls, but nostrils are cylindrical and open at the base of the upper bill. Total length: 46-51cm. Some have white foreheads, but the back of the head is white with a black-brown mottled pattern. Flight feathers and tail feathers are black-brown. The back, upper tail coverts, and pelicans are brown, but the edges of each feather are light and scaly. The throat and underside are white. They breed in the waters off the coast of Japan, Vladivostok in the Russian Far East, the Korean Peninsula, the Shandong Peninsula in China, and Taiwan, as well as on offshore islands. They breed in groups, and nest in horizontal holes dug on slopes in forests, laying dead leaves and other materials. They go out to sea during the day, return to islands after sunset, and fly off islands before sunrise. They climb trees to fly out to sea. They catch fish, mainly anchovies and squid, by swimming or shallowly diving. Many of their breeding grounds, including Sankanjima Island in Iwate Prefecture and Matsumae Town in Hokkaido, have been designated as national natural monuments.

ミズナギドリ目ミズナギドリ科。外見はカモメ類に似ているが，鼻孔が上嘴基部に筒状になって開口している。全長 46～51cm。額は白いものもいるが，頭部背面は白色地に黒褐色のまだら模様。風切羽や尾羽は黒褐色。背から上尾筒，雨覆羽は褐色だが，各羽の縁の色が淡く，うろこ模様になっている。喉から腹面は白い。日本近海，ロシア極東部のウラジオストク，朝鮮半島，中国のシャントン（山東）半島，タイワン（台湾）の沿岸や沖合いの島嶼で繁殖する。集団繁殖し，森林内の斜面に掘った横穴の中に枯れ葉などを敷いて営巣する。日中は海上に出て，日没後に島へ戻り，日の出前に島から飛び立つ。海に出るときは木に登って飛び出す。泳ぎながら，または浅く潜水しておもにカタクチイワシなどの魚やイカをとる。岩手県三貫島，北海道松前町など多くの繁殖地が国の天然記念物に指定されている。
