〘Noun〙 A marine fish of the Percidae family. It can reach a length of about one meter. Its body is long and spindle-shaped. Its mouth is large, with the lower jaw protruding beyond the upper jaw. Its back is gray-blue and its abdomen is silvery-white. Young fish have small black-brown dots scattered on the sides and dorsal fin. It spawns at the mouth of the bay in winter. Young fish invade the bay and even the estuary from spring to summer. Some of them swim upstream in the rivers. The parent fish also enter the bay from spring to summer, and gather in rocky areas with good tidal flow. As the water temperature drops in autumn, both species move from the offshore depths to the mouth of the bay to spend the winter. It is carnivorous, swallowing fish and crustaceans whole. It is found along the coasts from Hokkaido to Kyushu. It is a popular fishing fish. It is in season in summer, and is served grilled with salt or as sashimi. Young fish are called "seigo" and slightly grown fish are called "fukko". The names change as the fish matures, so it is called a fish that grows along with mullet and yellowtail. 〘名〙 スズキ科の海産魚。全長約一メートルに達する。体は細長い紡錘形。口は大きく、下あごは上あごより突出する。背部は灰青色で腹部は銀白色。幼魚では体側や背びれに黒褐色の小点が散在。冬季、湾口部で産卵する。幼魚は春から夏に湾内、さらに河口部などに侵入する。一部は河川をさかのぼる。親魚も春から夏に湾内に入り、潮通しのよい岩礁域に群れる。ともに、秋の水温の低下とともに沖の深みから湾口に移動し、越冬する。動物食で魚類、甲殻類などを丸のみにする。北海道から九州までの沿岸に分布する。釣り魚として人気がある。旬は夏で、塩焼き、刺身などにする。稚魚を「せいご」、少し成長したものを「ふっこ」といい、成育につれて呼称が異なるのでボラ、ブリなどとともに出世魚と呼ばれる。《季・秋》※古事記(712)上「栲縄の千尋縄打ち延へ、釣為し海人の、口大の、尾翼鱸〈鱸を訓みて須受岐と云ふ〉」
