1884‐1951 American Republican politician. Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan. After serving as editor of the local newspaper, the Grand Rapids Herald (1906-28), he served as a senator from Michigan from 1928. He was consistently active as a leading senator in the field of foreign affairs. Initially an isolationist, he supported the Neutrality Act of the 1930s and opposed the Lend-Lease Act of 1941. The outbreak of war between Japan and the United States marked a turning point for him as an internationalist, and in April 1945 he participated in the American delegation to the founding conference of the United Nations, where he garnered support in the Senate for the United States joining the UN.
