American Republican politician. Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan. After serving as editor of the local newspaper, the Grand Rapids Herald (1906-28), he served as a senator from Michigan from 1928. He was consistently active as a leading senator in the field of foreign affairs. Initially an isolationist, he supported the Neutrality Act of the 1930s and opposed the Lend-Lease Act of 1941. The outbreak of war between Japan and the United States marked a turning point for him as an internationalist, and in April 1945 he participated in the American delegation to the founding conference of the United Nations, where he garnered support in the Senate for the United States joining the UN.

アメリカの共和党政治家。ミシガン州グランド･ラピッズ生れ。地元紙《グランド･ラピッズ･ヘラルド》の編集長(1906‐28)を経て，1928年以降ミシガン州選出上院議員。一貫して外交分野における有力上院議員として活躍。当初は孤立主義者で，30年代の中立法を支持し，41年の武器貸与法に反対の態度をとった。日米開戦を転機に国際主義者となり，45年4月国際連合創設会議にアメリカ代表団の一員として参加するとともに，アメリカの国連加入に対する上院の支持を取りまとめた。
