The capital of the eponymous region in the western part of the Russian Federation. A river port located at the point where the Desna River joins the Borba River. Population 460,500 (1992). Built as a fortress on the left bank of the Desna River, it was originally called Brujny. In the 14th century, it became part of Lithuania and Poland, but in 1500 Ivan III seized it and it was eventually incorporated into the Grand Duchy of Moscow. The river port was built during the reign of Peter the Great. Currently, it is the junction of six railway lines to Moscow, Smolensk, etc., and is also one of the centers of industry, including machine manufacturing. ロシア連邦西部,同名州の州都。デスナ川がボルバ川を合わせる地点にある河港。人口46万0500(1992)。デスナ川左岸の要塞として建設され,はじめはブルイニと称した。14世紀に,リトアニアとポーランドの領土となったが,1500年イワン3世が奪取し,最終的にモスクワ大公国に編入された。ピョートル大帝期に河港を建設。現在,モスクワ,スモレンスクなどへの鉄道6路線の分岐点であり,機械製作をはじめとする産業の中心地の一つでもある。
