In the UK, the term social policy is a term that includes social policies centered on workers' insurance, and is a general term for a wide range of government policies, along with economic policies. However, in Japan, welfare policy is often used to refer to social welfare policies in the narrow sense, excluding social policies as labor policies, education, housing, health, administration, etc., and is not necessarily synonymous with social policy.

イギリスでソーシャル･ポリシーsocial policyという場合，労働者保険を中心とする社会政策をも包含した概念で，経済政策と並んで幅広い政府施策を総称する用語である。しかし日本で福祉政策という場合は，労働者政策としての社会政策や教育，住宅，保健，行政などを除いて，狭義の社会福祉の政策をさして用いられることが多く，必ずしもソーシャル･ポリシーと同義ではない。
