…He was born as the second son of a London clothing merchant. He showed unusual visions from an early age, and was once scolded by his father for seeing angels hanging from the trees in Peckham Rye. He did not receive formal education, but at the age of 10 he entered the Parr School of Art and learned engraving and copperplate printing from James Basire (1730-1802). In 1782 he married Catherine Boucher, the daughter of a horticulturist, and supported his family by engraving under the patronage of W. Haley, while devoting himself to his creative endeavors. …
