1806‐65 Belgian painter. Born in Dinant, he studied at the Academy in Antwerp. He lived in Paris from 1829 to 1832. After winning the Prix de Rome, he studied in Italy from 1834 to 1837. After returning to the United States, he worked in Brussels. He was fond of grotesque and fantastical subjects, such as Hunger, Madness and Crime (1853) and The Awakening of a Man Buried Alive (1854), and became a pioneer of the Symbolist movement. In 1850, he was given an atelier by the Belgian government, which is now the Wielts Museum. [Takahashi Yuko] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
