Mr. Kono

Japanese:
Mr. Kono

A famous clan in Iyo Province (Ehime Prefecture). Shugo (military governor) in the Middle Ages. In the past, they were called the Ochi clan and lived in Ochi County, Iyo Province, and their ancestor was Ochi no Miyatsuko Ochi no Mikoto. Their descendants became Ochi County governors and Zonin Kokugyo governors, and gradually became a group of samurai. At the end of the ancient period, they moved to Kono-go, Kazahaya County, built Takanawayama Castle, and called themselves the Kono clan. During the Genpei War, Michikiyo followed the Minamoto clan and became a retainer, and in the Battle of Yashima and Dannoura, Michinobu led the navy and achieved military success, and came to lead small and medium-sized samurai groups in the Naka and Toyo regions. During the Jōkyū War (1221), Tsune and Michihisa, father and son, split between Kyoto and Kamakura, but their territories were passed down to Michihisa's descendants. Ippen, the founder of the Tokimune clan, was Tsune's grandson. Michihisa's grandson Michiari played an active role during the Mongol invasions. When Ashikaga Takauji rebelled against Emperor Godaigo's Kenmu Restoration government, Kono Michimori responded by being appointed as shugo (military governor) with his base at Yuzuki Castle in Onsen County (Matsuyama City), and his descendants inherited the position (the branch families, Tokuno and Doi, belonged to the Southern Court). Even before the Onin War (1467-1477), the main family and the branch family of the Yoshu family had been fighting, and the family was attacked by warlords from outside, such as the Mori, Otomo, and Chosokabe clans, and was unable to transform into a feudal lord in the Sengoku period. In 1585 (Tensho 13), Toyotomi Hideyoshi invaded Shikoku, confiscating the family's territories and leading to its downfall.
