A perennial plant of the Paeoniaceae family. It is said to be native to the grasslands of Siberia, northern China, and the northern part of the Korean Peninsula, and has been introduced to Japan since ancient times and cultivated in various places for ornamental purposes. It has an underground rhizome, and every year a new green stem grows from the thick roots, reaching a height of 1m. The leaves are alternate, and the lower part is bifoliate compound, while the upper part is trifoliate compound or simple, green, hairless and glossy on both sides. In early summer, it produces large beautiful flowers at the ends of the branches. It has 5 sepals, about 10 petals, many stamens, and about 3 to 5 pistils. There are many horticultural varieties, and the most common are double-flowered ones with petalized stamens. The flower color is red, white, and other diverse depending on the variety. The dried roots are used as a painkiller. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
