1836‐78 Russian author. She dropped out of the Faculty of Medicine at Moscow University and entered the world of theater, but returned to study ethnology and traveled around the country to build the foundations of her literary career. When she made her literary debut in 1860, she was exposed to the ideas of Chernyshevsky, and became involved in the Commune and women's liberation movements. Her most famous work, Hard Times (1865), has the socialist Laznotsintsy as the protagonist. On the other hand, she wrote works such as The Guest, The Cossacks, and Dead Bodies, which were set in the magazine The Modern Man and took a direct look at the lives of the common people, mainly from 1863 to 1866. Rather than romanticizing the negative aspects of the people, she vividly portrayed their "bitter reality" in a comical style, which influenced later realism.
