Architectural term. Also called hall church. A typical church style of German late Gothic. The height of the nave and side aisles are almost the same, and it lacks the nave clerestory and triforium seen in the normal basilica style, and lighting comes from large windows in the side aisles. It was born from the tendency to seek a unified interior space. It originated in Romanesque churches in the Poitou region of France, and developed mainly in Germany from the 13th century onwards, becoming a typical style of German church architecture in the 14th and 15th centuries. Representative works include St. Stephen's Cathedral in Mainz (1257-1328) and St. Elisabeth Cathedral in Marburg (around 1275).
