A bird of the Anatidae family (illustration). It breeds in the mid-latitudes of Eurasia and migrates to Europe and southern Asia in winter. It once bred almost throughout Europe, but now breeds only in northern and eastern Europe. It rarely migrates to Japan as a winter bird. It lives in lakes, marshes, and wetlands. It is about 84 cm long. The body is gray-brown overall, with the head and neck being especially gray. The underside is pale. The Asian subspecies has a pink beak, but the European subspecies has an orange-red beak.

カモ目カモ科の鳥(イラスト)。ユーラシア大陸の中緯度地方で繁殖し,冬季にはヨーロッパおよびアジアの南部に渡る。ヨーロッパではかつてほぼ全土で繁殖していたが,現在は北と東ヨーロッパにだけ繁殖している。日本にはごくまれに冬鳥として渡来する。湖沼,湿地にすむ。全長約84cm。体は全体に灰褐色で,とくに頭頸(とうけい)部は灰色みが強い。下面は淡色である。くちばしはアジアの亜種では桃肉色だが,ヨーロッパの亜種では橙赤色をしている。
