Also written as kei, it is also called keisu (鏧) kinsu (鏧) , uchigane (钙) , dobachi (钙) or colloquially zarugane (鏧). It is a type of musical instrument used in Buddhism, made of copper or bronze and shaped like a large bowl. It is placed on a wooden stand with a cushion underneath and is struck on the rim with a leather-wrapped wooden bai (桴). Some sects distinguish between large and small keisu (大鏧) and use them separately. Keisu are mainly struck by monks in roles such as sutra head, first sutra, and Vinaya (威奈) to mark the end of each stage of a ceremony or as a signal when reciting sutras.
