A bird of the family Fringillidae. It resembles a sparrow and has a wingspan of 8.5 cm. It is widely distributed in central Eurasia. In Japan, it breeds in the subalpine coniferous forests north of central Honshu, and migrates to lowlands in winter. It builds a cup-shaped nest on a branch and feeds on nuts, buds, insects, etc., and sometimes damages cherry blossom buds. Its voice sounds like a whistle.
