A bird of the family Fringillidae. It resembles a sparrow and has a wingspan of 8.5 cm. It is widely distributed in central Eurasia. In Japan, it breeds in the subalpine coniferous forests north of central Honshu, and migrates to lowlands in winter. It builds a cup-shaped nest on a branch and feeds on nuts, buds, insects, etc., and sometimes damages cherry blossom buds. Its voice sounds like a whistle. アトリ科の鳥。形はスズメに似て，翼長8.5cm。ユーラシア大陸中部に広く分布。日本では本州中部以北の亜高山帯の針葉樹林で繁殖し，冬は低地へ移る。枝上に椀形の巣を作り，木の実，芽，昆虫などを食べ，ときにサクラの花芽を食害する。声は口笛に似ている。
