In the old days, the main stream of the Nagara River was the upstream Gujo River, which flowed west from Nakaya in Yamagata County to join the Ijira River, then flowed south from Iwari in Katagata County (both now in Gifu City) to join the Tsubo River, and then joined the Sakai River (Kiso River) at Sunomata. However, in 1534 (Tenbun 3), due to a major flood of the Gujo River, it flowed south from Nakaya, joined the Tsubo River at Akutami, and passed through Nagara and Kagashima (both now in Gifu City) to enter the Sakai River. In the flood of 1611 (Keicho 16), the Shinkawa River branched off in front of Nagara Sofukuji Temple and joined the Ijira River.

　古くは長良川の主流は，上流郡上川が山県（やまがた）郡の中屋から西流して伊自良川を合わせ，方県（かたがた）郡の岩利（いわり）(ともに現，岐阜市)から南流して津保川を入れ，墨俣（すのまた）で境川(古木曾川)に合流していたが，1534年(天文3)の郡上川の大洪水で中屋から南下して，芥見で津保川に合流し，長良，鏡嶋（かがしま）(ともに現，岐阜市)を経て境川に入るようになった。1611年(慶長16)の洪水では，長良崇福寺の前に新川が分出して伊自良川に合流するようになった。…
