A town in Suwa County, central Nagano Prefecture. Located on the north shore of Lake Suwa, the central settlement developed as a temple town for the Shimosha shrine of Suwa Taisha, a post town on the Nakasendo, Koshu Kaido, and Ina Kaido roads, and a hot spring town. Before the war, it prospered as a silk-reeling town, and in recent years, precision machinery manufacturing has flourished. The Chuo Main Line passes through the town. Shimo-Suwa Onsen on the lakeside has a simple spring water temperature of 44°C, and is a tourist base for the Yatsugatake Chushin Kogen Quasi-National Park.
