A town in Kamikawa District, Hokkaido. With vast virgin forests in the Kitami Mountains, forestry is thriving, with lumber and woodworking industries. The lowlands along the Nayoro River, which runs west through the center of the town, are used for farming, producing potatoes and other crops. There is also a tenobe dried noodle factory. 北海道上川郡の町。北見山地の原始林が広く，林業が盛んで，製材・木工業を営む。中央部を西に流れる名寄川沿いの低地に畑が開け，ジャガイモなどを産する。手のべ乾めん工場もある。下川鉱山は，日本有数の銅鉱山であったが閉山。644.20km2。3775人（2010）。
