A Dutch orchestra. Organized in 1888 as the resident orchestra of the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, its first conductor was Willem Kes (1856-1934). His successor, Willem Mengelberg, worked hard until 1945 to build and nurture the orchestra's individuality, characterized by the sound of strings and romantic emotion. Beinum and then Haitink took over as permanent conductors, and continue to do so to this day. The orchestra specializes in Mahler and Romantic works, and in 1920 it held a festival featuring Mahler's entire orchestra. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
