Mount Inari

Japanese: 稲荷山 - いなりやま

One of the central urban areas in the Koshoku district of Chikuma City in northern Nagano Prefecture. Former name of the town. In 1959, it merged with neighboring towns and villages to form Koshoku City. It occupies the left bank of the Chikuma River, at the foot of Sasayama, and is the gateway to the Nagano Basin where the Hokkoku Nishi Kaido (Zenkoji Kaido) crosses Sarugaba Pass. Until the end of the Meiji period, it was a commercial power on a par with Nagano City. It became deserted with the opening of the Shinonoi Line and the development of Nagano City, but rows of earthen storehouse-style merchant houses still stand, evocative of the past.

長野県北部，千曲市更埴地区の中心市街地の一つ。旧町名。 1959年近隣町村と合体して更埴市となった。千曲川左岸，篠山の山麓部を占め，北国西街道 (善光寺街道) が猿ヶ馬場峠を越えて長野盆地に入る玄関口にあたり，明治末期までは長野市と並ぶ商業勢力をもっていた。篠ノ井線の開通や長野市の発展で寂れたが，往時をしのばせる土蔵造りの商家が軒を連ねている。
