Lower [village] - Shimo

Japanese: 下[村] - しも

A village in Imizu County in the north-central part of Toyama Prefecture. Population 2,079 (1995). Located in the western part of the Toyama Plain, most of the village area is lowland with an altitude of less than 1m. The central settlement, Kamo, had a post station established by the Kaga Domain in 1662 (Kanbun 2), and prospered as a post town on the Hokuriku road, but has stagnated since the Meiji period. It is a paddy field monoculture region, and rice is the main industry, but in recent years there has been a marked shift towards other occupations, and there are many commuters to both Toyama and Shinminato. At Kamo Shrine in the village, religious ceremonies such as "Yansanma" (horseback archery), bull riding, and children's dance are handed down.

富山県中央北部，射水（いみず）郡の村。人口2079(1995)。富山平野の西部にあり，村域の大半は標高1m未満の低地である。中心集落の加茂は1662年(寛文2)加賀藩により宿駅が設置され，北陸道の宿場町としてにぎわったが，明治以降は停滞した。水田単作地域で米作が中心であるが，近年兼業化が著しく，富山･新湊両市への通勤者も多い。村内の加茂神社には〈やんさんま〉(流鏑馬（やぶさめ）)，牛乗，稚児舞などの神事が伝わる。
