Blood-brain barrier

Normal brain tissue has a mechanism that prevents certain substances in the blood, such as substances that are harmful to the brain, from entering the brain, and this mechanism is thought to be due to the action of the inner membrane of the capillaries. This mechanism is called the blood-brain barrier. In fetuses and newborns, this mechanism does not work properly. Neonatal kernicterus occurs when bilirubin, which normally should not enter the brain, enters the brain from the blood.

正常な脳組織には血液中のある物質，たとえば脳にとって有害な物質が脳内に侵入するのを防ぐ機構があり，毛細血管の内膜の働きによるとされている。この機構を血液脳関門と呼ぶ。胎児や新生児ではこれが十分働かない。新生児核黄疸は，正常では入らないはずのビリルビンが血中から脳内に入ることによって起る。
