Normal brain tissue has a mechanism that prevents certain substances in the blood, such as substances that are harmful to the brain, from entering the brain, and this mechanism is thought to be due to the action of the inner membrane of the capillaries. This mechanism is called the blood-brain barrier. In fetuses and newborns, this mechanism does not work properly. Neonatal kernicterus occurs when bilirubin, which normally should not enter the brain, enters the brain from the blood.
