Also called "Shuenokane." A term used in Buddhist ceremonies. A gathering refers to the gathering of monks at a designated place prior to a ceremony, and a gathering bell refers to the striking of a kansho (half bell, small bell) to announce this. The way the kansho is struck varies depending on the sect, but in Shingon Buddhism, for example, it is called "Santsu Sange," which means striking the bell slowly and strongly several times at first, gradually getting faster and softer, and repeating this three times, before finally striking it loudly three times. 〈しゅえのかね〉ともいう。仏教儀式の用語。集会とは儀式に先立って僧侶らが所定の場所に集合することをいい,集会鐘はそれを報ずるために喚鐘(かんしよう)(半鐘,小鐘)が打たれることを指す。喚鐘の打ち方は宗派によって異なるが,たとえば真言宗では〈三通三下(さんつうさんげ)〉といい,初めゆっくりと強く数回打ち,しだいに速く弱くしていくことを3回反復し,最後に大きく3度打ち鳴らす奏法を用いる。【塚本 篤子】
