A place name in the central and southern part of Fukushima Prefecture. The name Ishishiro Kuni no Miyatsuko can be seen in ancient times, but it was incorporated into Mutsu and became a county during the Taika Reforms. In 718 , it became Ishishiro Province along with the counties of Shirakawa, Aizu, Asaka , and Shinobu , but in 724 , it was again incorporated into Mutsu. The current county is written as "Iwase." 福島県中南部の地名。古代に石背国造の名が見えるが、大化改新で陸奥に編入され郡となる。養老二年(七一八)白河、会津、安積(あさか)、信夫(しのぶ)の諸郡とともに石背国となったが、神亀元年(七二四)再び陸奥に編入された。現在の郡は「岩瀬」と書く。
