An aliphatic amine. A gas with an odor similar to ammonia. It is usually sold commercially as an aqueous solution. The aqueous solution is slightly alkaline. It is more basic than ammonia. It was isolated, along with trimethylamine, as a component of the saltwater used to soak herring. It is synthesized by the alkaline decomposition of ammonia, methanol (methyl alcohol), and p (para)-nitrosodimethylaniline. When treated with nitrous acid, it produces N -dimethylnitrosamine (commonly known as nitrosamine, abbreviated as DMNA), which is a highly carcinogenic substance.
