...The birth of synthetic dyes began in 1856 when British chemist WH Perkin discovered a reddish-purple pigment by oxidizing aniline, named it mauve, and commercialized it in 1857.
[Dye names and classifications]
Dyes are called by trade names (or common names) and Colour Index names (abbreviated CI names). Trade names are made up of three symbols: the title, the colour name and the dyeing term.
