A unit of length equal to 10 -10 meters. Also called tenth meter. Not included in the International System of Units (SI), but shown as a non-SI unit. Its symbol is Å. It is used to express atomic measurements and wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation in the visible, near infrared, and near ultraviolet regions. It is derived from the wavelength of the red line of cadmium, which is agreed to be 6438.4696 Å in dry air containing 0.03% carbon dioxide by volume, at standard atmospheric pressure, and at a temperature of 1 °C. The unit was approved by the General Conference on Weights and Measures in 1927. It is named after the Swedish physicist Ångström, who used it to describe wavelengths in the solar spectrum.
