This is an industrial method for producing nitric acid by oxidation of ammonia. It was invented by FW Ostwald. A mixture of ammonia and air is reacted at high temperatures over a platinum or platinum-rhodium catalyst to produce nitrogen oxide NO, which is then oxidized at low temperatures to nitrogen dioxide NO2 , which is then absorbed in water to produce nitric acid.
