A gastropod of the family Caribogastropodidae. The shell is about 3 cm long, 2.5 cm wide, and 1 cm high. It is a low, flat oval shape, and is coiled at the rear end. The outer surface of the shell is purple-brown and covered with brown skin, while the inner surface is dark purple-brown with a thin white plate at the rear. It attaches to the shells of turban shells, red seaweeds, Japanese mullets, and long-striped shells that live below the intertidal zone to depths of about 20 m, as well as to the shells of mainly gastropod shells containing hermit crabs. It is native to the west coast of North America, but was first discovered in Kanada Bay at the mouth of Tokyo Bay in the summer of 1968, and quickly spread up the Pacific coast to Onahama in the north and Kyushu in the south, eventually settling in Japan.
