An old city in central Fukui Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1948. It is located in the Takefu Basin, which runs south from the Fukui Plain. The city center faces the Hino River, a tributary of the Kuzuryu River. In the past, it was the capital of Echizen Province, and in the Edo Period, it was the castle town of the Honda clan, a chief retainer of the Fukui Domain. It is known for its traditional industries such as forged cutlery, washi paper, and mosquito nets, but in recent years, industries such as electrical equipment, textiles, and plastic processing have also flourished, and its manufacturing shipment value (2001) exceeds that of Fukui City. The Chrysanthemum Doll Exhibition held in Central Park from October to November is famous. It is connected to the Hokuriku Main Line, the Fukui Railway Line, and the Hokuriku Expressway. In October 2005, it merged with Imadate Town, Imadate County, to form Echizen City. It has an area of ​​185.32 km2 . It has a population of 71,362 (2003).

福井県中部の旧市。1948年市制。福井平野の南に続く武生盆地に位置する。中心市街は九頭竜(くずりゅう)川の支流日野川に臨み,古くは越前国府がおかれ,江戸時代は福井藩付家老本多氏の城下町。打刃物,和紙,蚊帳などの伝統産業で知られるが,近年は,電気機器,繊維,プラスチック加工などの工業も盛んで,福井市をしのぐ製造品出荷額(2001)を上げている。10〜11月中央公園で開かれる菊人形展は有名。北陸本線,福井鉄道線,北陸自動車道が通じる。2005年10月,今立郡今立町と合併し市制,越前市となる。185.32km2。7万1362人(2003)。
