A novel published in 1860 under the pen name Murtatulli by Dutch novelist Douwes Deckel, based on his experiences working as a colonial official in West Java. The novel deeply shocked the Netherlands as it exposed the harsh exploitation of natives by Dutch colonial officials and indigenous chiefs in the mid-19th century, and is said to have been one of the catalysts that led to the abolition of the forced cultivation system, a colonial policy at the time. The tragic love story of Saija and Adinda depicted in the novel depicts the life of a young man who resists harsh rule and dies, and had a strong influence on later Indonesian nationalists.
